Thirteenth Street Alliance Forming! An Update….

August 16th, 2008 | by Rick Gibson

An “alliance” of powerful neighborhood associations and their representatives is in the formative stages and moving very quickly to improve the 13th Street corridor.   On August 14, 2008 at 5:45 at the office of the Alliance’s elected President Kathleen Barry of HOMES, Inc. the newly formed Board met to further progress to improve our City and SMRCA.

Representing SMRCA on the Board are;   Rick Gibson, Past-President, P.J. Espinal, SMRCA Board Member, and Ray Thrower, SMRCA Member and Chair of the SMRCA Strategic Planning Committee.    This particular meeting was dedicated to key decisions which will result in bylaw formation, possible branding and more.   The most notable topic which may have tremendous positive implications for 13th Street was the rapid advancement to utilize beautiful African artwork, stored currently without appreciation in the medians on 13th Street.    The artwork, which is extremely striking and impressive, will be placed on the medians along 13th Street, by utilization of a City grant already approved.   This improvement should be enjoyed by residents prior to the end of 2008.

Otherwise, the Alliance consists of Lakeridge, Middle River Terrace, South Middle River and Poinsettia Heights.   This is going to be a powerful alliance to further the interests of all of our neighborhoods and our quality of life.   Please look forward to further updates.

Peacocks In Paradise by Brad Laird

July 8th, 2008 | by admin

By now many of you have noticed our resident population of Peacocks.  If you haven’t you can drive by NW 7th Ter and 17th St at dusk where you’ll be sure to see them.  Thankfully Fort Lauderdale considers peacocks a protected species so interfering with them is against the law.

Introduced to our neighborhood a few years ago from other Fort Lauderdale neighborhoods such as Victoria Park and Sailboat Bend, our peacocks have thrived with the watchful eye of a few compassionate neighbors.

Peacocks are graceful elegant creatures which add to the fabric of our environment.  Watch as people take notice of them for the first time.   You will see cars stopped as the peacocks cross the road at their own pace.  Oftentimes you will see people trying to get close enough to take a nice picture.

Peacocks are omnivorous and can fend for themselves on a diet of bugs and some vegetation.  I often see them clipping the ends of our grass with their beaks.  They love nothing more than to discover a supply of cat food.  Luckily, they’re much bigger than cats and do not consider them a threat.

So enjoy them as they gently walk by and marvel at what nature has created in the Peacock.
