President’s Message
August 6th, 2008 | by Robert Alcock
I thank the board for their support in newly electing me as President subject to ratification by the general membership. I am excited and look forward to working with you as we move forward and continue through the end of next year.
Our neighborhood has seen long and short term projects come to fruition this year and many feel it is an appropriate time to celebrate the milestones we have reached. I take this opportunity to thank our current board as well as previous leaders and boards for all their contributions - all should be recognized as some of these projects were started by one board and finished by another.
Among those accomplishments:
- Full color cover newsletter, hand delivered across the neighborhood.
- Improvement to association structure by the addition of committees.
- Collection of our long standing escrow with Venice Cove of $15,000.
- Contribution to establishing the 13th Street Alliance - potentially having huge benefits to our neighborhood in the future.
- Installation (underway) of custom street signs along 13th Street.
- Planting of Florida native, drought tolerant shrubs and trees in the street closures at Sunrise Blvd. through a Broward Beautiful Grant, complete with repaired sprinklers by the City of Fort Lauderdale and installation of full size Sable palms - the state tree of Florida.
- New location for general membership meetings to Fort Lauderdale High School.
Our September newsletter theme will be “A New Sunrise”. My top priority is for us to be united and continue with the message of solidarity that has been established with the City of Fort Lauderdale. I have a list as long as my arm of things that I would like to see happen in our neighborhood, and based on e-mails, I am not alone! But we have to prioritize in order to be most effective. Our top priorities are as follows:
- Improve fiscal procedures to enable us to continue recent growth.
- Continue working closely with City officials in fighting crime, code violations and promoting development in our area.
- Maintain our relationship with advertisers in the newsletter and website and work toward making it the #1 neighborhood newsletter in South Florida!
- Help people realize that South Middle River is the best place to invest for the future - we are moving forwards!
Thank you.
Robert Alcock, President
South Middle River Civic Association
