The Time To Act Is Now - Cry Out For Your Neighborhood

November 18th, 2008 | by Carmen Smith

stabilization1

Click on above “stabilization” word next to the broken window in your neighborhood, for “Neighborhood Saving” news. If there was ever a time to Cry-Out for South Middle River neighborhood, that time is NOW! If you don’t know about the Federal dollars coming into Fort Lauderdale to revitalize our area, inundated with foreclosures and run down properties, then wake up! It will take more than a handful of civic activists to make our voices heard at City Hall. It will take an organized movement.

We need to turn all eyes to our impoverished area. We need 3,000 phone calls, letters and e-mails to our Commissioner, Charlotte Rodstrom and the City Manager, at the Fort Lauderdale City Hall, and voice your support for Federal monies for South Middle River to knock down the run down properties and build affordable townhomes for purchase. The main number is 954-828-5000.

WE CAN’T AFFORD ANY MORE SECTION 8 HOUSING OR RENTALS IN SOUTH MIDDLE RIVER. WE HAVE THE MOST SECTION 8 IN ALL OF FORT LAUDERDALE AND IT’S NOT FAIR!! SPEAK UP! GET EDUCATED AND LEARN ABOUT WHAT’S GOING ON THAT WILL IMPACT YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD.

THE OUTCOME WILL DEPEND ON YOUR ACTION OR LACK THEREOF.

President’s Message

August 6th, 2008 | by Robert Alcock

I thank the board for their support in newly electing me as President subject to ratification by the general membership. I am excited and look forward to working with you as we move forward and continue through the end of next year.
Our neighborhood has seen long and short term projects come to fruition this year and many feel it is an appropriate time to celebrate the milestones we have reached. I take this opportunity to thank our current board as well as previous leaders and boards for all their contributions - all should be recognized as some of these projects

Hey Neighbors!

A casting producer from CBS contacted me today to invite the residents of
Fort Lauderdale Neighborhoods to apply for the next great reality
competition series!!!

I think this is an exciting opportunity to show off our fabulous
neighborhoods to the Nation, take part in a unique family bonding
experience, AND compete for a huge grand prize.

We will arrange to host a meeting with the Casting Producer, Ms. Kathie
Kopa, live via conference call from L.A. when you decided on whether you
would like to gather a team and compete.

Ms. Kopa will fill us in at that time with all the details about the show
and application process. Please email me if you wish to participate and we
will arrange the conference call in a location that will host you all. Light
refreshments will be served!

Anyone who cannot attend the meeting can reach Ms. Kopa at 310-566-7617 for
more information.

I’ve attached a flyer with more information and included a snippet about the
series from a recent article in Daily Variety.

CBS plays games with Mike Fleiss
Network orders up series from reality guru
By MICHAEL SCHNEIDER

CBS has given a seven-episode commitment to a new reality gamer from
“The Bachelor’s” Mike Fleiss.

Untitled project reps the first major series order by new Eye
reality chief Jennifer Bresnan, who replaced Ghen Maynard in the summer.
Skein will follow a neighborhood of families who compete against each other
for a grand prize.

Insiders said CBS quickly stepped up and offered a premium license
fee for the show. Casting is under way, but no airdate has been set.
Warner Horizon and Fleiss’ Next Entertainment banner are behind the
gamer. Pickup reunites CBS with Fleiss, who last exec produced “The Will” at
the net. He also produced specials for the Eye earlier in his career.

Halloween At Warfield Park

November 14th, 2008 | by Jim Howell

The children in the neighborhood were treated to a grand Halloween Party at Warfield Park, thanks to the hard work of Manager Sandra Sullivan and several South Middle River Civic Association volunteers. There was pumpkin carving, cookie decorating, face painting, mask making and piñatas for the happy party goers!

A big thanks goes to Karen Kong for hosting a pre-Halloween party where volunteers made masks, magic wands, angel wings and piñatas from recyclables. Vinnie Piperi, Carmen and Rob Smith, Donna Collins, Jim Howell, Brad Laird, Frank Crowley, Pam Roloff , Bill Lamont and Ann Poole contributed their time and talent to make this event a big success. We also were accompanied by Steve Glassman, who assisted in the set up.

Warfield Park is a major asset to our neighborhood. Sandra Sullivan and her staff offer a wide variety of after school activities for children of all ages. Help with homework, free tutoring, arts and crafts and athletics are just some of the services the park provides.
Volunteers are always needed. If you would like to get involved contact Jim Howell at ja2howell@aol.com or call 954-525-3627.
